THE ORIGINS: AMBERT (Puy-de-Dôme)

In the 1600’s, the Delayre family lived on a farm called “La Borie” near Ambert, France.

and Delayre families are STILL LIVING THERE

Thanks to the archives held in the city of Ambert, we were able to trace my ancestors all the way back to 1611. We could go no further. In 1610, the city burned 3 times, thus all records were erased.

Jules Romains, in his book “Les Copains” has this description: “The city hall of Ambert is a city hall where the front is everywhere but the middle is nowhere!"

MY GREAT-GRANDFATHER

The Infamous Antoine

My grandparents would not talk about him.

My grand-father told me one day he left with a “woman”.

My parents spent a lot of time trying to find him.

I finally found him when archives were digitized.

He had been sent to the penitentiary of Cayenne (Guyana) in 1907 where he died January 10, 1915. I could not find why he was sent there.

The day of his retirement (1959?) My Grand Father retired from Etablissement Flochet in Poitiers. He was the Foreman there and designed the first continuous oven to bake bread!

I was the oldest grand kid and the only one allowed to enter his shop.

One day, he taught me how to drill a hole in a piece of aluminum, using a vertical drill press.

I never forgot!

1994: Celebrating my grandmother’s 98th birthday

June 12, 1996: We celebrated her 100th birthday.

Here with her 1st grandkid and her 25th great grandkid.

She died four days later.
